Mornings with Mama
The smell of your house, something so familiar
But now it is wearing out by the silence that sits in the house.
The walls no longer speak but look deep the stories are still written
Within the cracks of the corners, the wallpaper warping, the CD’s collecting dust.
Even the dust spoke as if it were alive, just listen close enough.
This house was never silent with you in it.
The smell of you, something so comforting,
Not gone but far.
Close enough to remember the taste of trimate tea
You’d serve me at 7 A.M. to the 6-year-old me. It smelled sweet, like a flower.
The pinch of the many rings on your fingers that would pinch my cheeks as you held my face
Giving many kisses like I was gone for years when it was only a day
"Mi Corazon" you’d say in your strong but soothing voice.
Every morning, for years I could remember
Until no more.
Now the walls tell stories instead of you,
And the smells became distant.
Early mornings with you will have to wait
But I am patient, I can wait.
This is a great poem Marina! I love how you talked about the dust speaking if you listen close enough, I could really picture the dusty CD's, cracked corners and warped wallpaper. I love the imagery. I also love how you said the walls tell stories now, I think that is a great line to put into this poem. Your mother sounds like an amazing and warm person.
ReplyDeleteI love how you bring the whole poem into a full circle. You don’t have any loose ends and you keep it consistent. The poem is something that Cisneros would write about Mango Street. I love the ending as well. I thought it was very well done how you left it on an amazing note. Very well done!
