The poem that stood out to me the most was For Brothers Everywhere by Tim Seibles. This poem is about how a commonplace or activity can bring people together, and in some cases as close as your own family. One of the words that I circled and was used a lot during the poem was the word brothers. When you get close to people who have a common interest like a sport or a hobby you can get very close and relate to them in many ways someone else can’t. This is why when he uses the word brothers it has a big impact. When I was growing up my friends and I would go to play basketball after school since there is a court right beside it. There’s a special bond you create with the people you hang out with every day out on the court. Some of these people I never would have talked to if it wasn’t for basketball. The tone for this poem is unity or brothership for all the bonds that you can make out on the court or any other sport or hobby. A line that helps support this when Tim says “ in the schoolyard lit by brothers-- postin up,”(For Brothers Everywhere Line 12)
The chapter that stood out to me the most was the second to the last chapter titled A House of My Own. This chapter is very short only 10 sentences but it tells you what her dream is. Her dream is to have a house all to herself where she doesn’t have to clean up after anyone else, have her own little flowers, and just be on her own. This means a lot to me because I kind of want the same things in life. Just to have a nice little house where I can be on my own and be able to do whatever I please. I underlined this great metaphor that she used in the last sentence where she compared the quiet little house she wants to a blank piece of paper. I can just imagine her sitting in her own house looking out the window by the flowers. It is very peaceful.
Hello mason, I agree with you this poem was very outgoing and easy to relate too. The friends you grow up with stick around for awhile till about this time where everyone goes there separate ways. Playing games or sports with them are a big part of children's life it shows and bring out interest. I never played basketball but I agree I wouldnt be friends with some people today if it werent for hockey
ReplyDeleteI like how your favorite poem was one that the majority of the class didn't pick. I feel like you definitely saw a different side to For Brothers Everywhere. Brothers was a great word to circle I think it showed that sports (or any other common activity) among people bring you close together. There's definitely some unbreakable bonds I've made throughout my sports careers. A House of My Own in The House on Mango Street stuck out to me as well because we finally get to see Esperanza's biggest wish come true and how happy she is.
