Journal Seven

There was this senior who talked with me during my junior year of high school, and I don’t think anyone had shared their passion with such enthusiasm. Her name was Leo. She was an artist who was working on a comic book story with an intricate world of such level. I can only assume that she came across this passion by herself because there were people in her life that told her that her comic book idealism wasn’t the right path for her. Nevertheless, she pushed on, and teachers that were compassionate and inspired to keep following her dreams. Talking with her was a real treat, learning about the world she created and the characters she came up with. We would go back and forth with the stories that we were conducting and gave each other feedback. Learning about her creative process was the best part of our conversations, being able to compare your way of creating stories with another is something that is different than yours allows you to reflect on your on work and improve your creative process.

I think the purpose of the introduction of Callings was to give a quick background story of the creation of the book, how it came to be and the process the editors went through. It was also allowing us, the readers, to get ourselves ready for the many stories that awaited us.

The one profile that stood out to me was the one with Herman Heyn; the street-corner astronomer. I thought it was very heartwarming and delightful. The profile taught me that people who have weaknesses also have strengths and could use those to their advantage. Having fun with what you do make life a whole lot easier. As Callings writes, “I really enjoy sharing my love of the celestial sky anybody and everybody. I say the best part of my life is being out there with a telescope, and then it’s downhill from there.” (Callings 14)
