Someone I know personally that has a passion and a purpose for his work would have to be my high school assistant principal. Like his job, he is supposed to be there for his student, but he goes above and beyond that. For instance, if you were to go to him for advice or a problem he could just sit there and tell you one specific way to go about the situation, but he goes beyond that by giving multiple options and giving you resources to help as well. He cares for his students and faculty.
In the introduction of the book Callings by Dave Isay, we learn the purpose of the book and what inspired him to write it. He got his inspiration for writing this book based on his wife’s ob-gyn passion for her work. In the introduction, we learn that he adores the ob-gyn, we also learn his wife’s ob-gyn has a passion for what she does and that she is determined in the work that she does. This book is written to share everyday people’s stories on how they found their passion and purpose for the work that they do.
A profile in the book that I liked, in particular, was “Street-Corner Astronomer”. I liked this profile because in a way I feel like I can personally relate to it. In this profile, we learn Herman Heyn has a learning disability and he always believed that because of his disability he couldn’t be a scientist like he had wanted to be. One of his teachers Miss Wicker gave him the assignment to go out and find the big dipper, little did he know this would become a passion of his and later become his purpose for work. Dave Isay says “I got hooked on astronomy from that very moment” (Isay 11). I believed this was a powerful part of this profile because this is when he realized he had a passion for looking at stars and planets. I can personally relate to this profile because I find enjoyment in looking at the stars and planets as well.

I remember early on in class you bringing up this key figure in your life. Glad to hear that he has made such a good impact on your life. Can really feel the admiration that you have towards him especially in this line "He cares for his students and faculty.". Anyhow I feel as though a great many in the class like the street corner astronomer and it is not hard to see why.
