Journal Seven

A person I know personally who I think has the most passion for what they do is probably my brother.

My brother is 24 years old and works as a civil engineer with his company on the side. I don't see my brother too often which is mainly because of the long hours he works every day.  Ever since high school my brother has always been doing things to be productive such as going to the gym every day, volunteering, and working. His work ethic transferred over into his adult life where he is working 70+ hours a week. Whenever I see my brother he's always telling me about his experience and how he loves his job and is always trying to learn more and develop his skills. I think what led my brother to be like this is probably his motivation to always keep on learning and bettering himself, when I was young my brother would always take the leadership role and would always try to mentor and give me good tips on being successful with anything I do, I think this mentality is definitely the reason why he is so passionate about his work today.

I think that the introduction to Callings' purpose was to tell the reader what the book was about to read is all about. The author tells us about his own life and how he dropped out of med school to become a radio host and pursue his real dream, he later then goes on to tell us that he starts to go around and talk to people to understand what there calling is and there reason and purpose for working. I learned that from this section of the book that it can be okay to take risks if it means I might live a more meaningful life.

My favorite profile is the first one that is talked about, John Heyn, 56, Talks with his uncle Herman Heyn, 83, A street-corner astronomer. I learned from this occupation that you can find purpose and make an earning from the really small things in life. A man named Herman goes out every night with his telescope to a street corner and lets people look through his telescope to look at the starry night. The main factor that led to Herman pursuing his calling is his endless amounts of dead end jobs he worked. "--and each time I'd start a new job I'd say, "I'm going to stay with it. I'm going to get benefits and vacation and retirement and raises," but three years later I wouldn't be able to stand it anymore, and I had to get out of there and get another job." (Heyn, 13). From this quote, we can understand that Herman was fed up living a mediocre life doing something he doesn't want to do. I think this is where he hit his breaking point to try and pursue something he will enjoy for the rest of his life.

  1. Hello I never really see my sister either because she works long hours so I feel you when you don’t see your brother. I also really liked the story about Herman, I think he will love his occupation as his life goes on. I also learned that it is okay too take risks for a more meaningful job for your life.
