Journal 5- Angel A. Ortiz Martinez

One of the poems in which gathered my attention in the Cisneros book was “A house of my own”. It was very simple but meant so much than the words were able to describe, in which to me this specific line made me think more in depth “With my porch and my pillow, my pretty purple petunias” (Cisneros 108). In a sense I feel she talks about her privacy and her dream to actually be in her element, in an area she can feel at one with herself, nothing like having a place of your own. Being with yourself and in her case the stories and every single memory in which Mango Street was able to give to her.

In the Cisneros book one of the chapter in which caught my attention was: “Alicia & I Talking on Edna’s Steps”. This one specifically shifting to the end when Alicia states: “Like it or not you are Mango Street, and one day you’ll come back too” (Cisneros 107). One of the things that instantly came to my mind the correlation in which this chapter has with the very last one. Even though she is still in Mango street, once she leaves, she might have a little piece with her as to me it is the stories of Mango Street as I interpreted it. One of the tone in said chapter was prideful in a sense due to the fact that Alicia feels pride for Mango street and the weirdness and unique state it’s at, even though Esperanza was not convinced that Mango street was all great and everything ever since the beginning of the book ( this is where my correlation enters) all the stories in which she tells through the book it is in fact all in Mango Street. In a sense she is still Mango Street maybe not in a physical aspect.
