Someone in my life that has for sure found their calling is actually my boss at my job. He lost his original job a few years back, and I'm good friends with his daughter so I kind of knew what was going on and it was really tough on their family. I work at and ice cream place called Bruster's it's a very small chain, there's only three of these stores in Ohio. But he has such a knack for food service and customer service it's very evident that he enjoy his job and he enjoys being around us and the customers every single day!
The purpose of the Introduction of Callings was to show where Dave Isay had gotten the idea for the book. His ob-gyn showed a lot of dedication for her work, she even left her dad when he was dying to go deliver a baby. He talked about how he dropped out of medical school and how overwhelming it was and he talks about how if you don't take chances or dream you will never be fully satisfied in life. He teaches us to listen to the tiny voice in our heads and to follow our instincts and to find meaning in the work we do.
My favorite profile was with John Maycumber and his girlfriend Barbara Abelhauser who is a bridge tender in Jacksonville, Florida. What I learned from Barbara was that if you're unhappy with a constant in your life you can always change it, and although the benefits and pay weren't good in her case, she still embraced and enjoyed her job more than anything. From her calling, I learned about how observant bridge tenders are and how peaceful the job can be. Barbara came to her calling because she wasn't happy with her job, she hated the office politics and never wanted to get out of bed, she explains this by saying "For fourteen years I worked as a state employee, and I was miserable. I would wake up in the morning and dread going in. I just wasn't happy with the pantyhose and office politics kind of thing" (Isay 17).
The Big Dipper
Hello, liked you asked on my post me and my sister are closeish its been hard since she lives down at her college in a house so I don’t see her a lot. The bridge tender sounds like a boring job too me but if she loves it wants too do that for the rest of her life that’s okay. Also I agree with that we should listen to the tiny voice in our head to follow our instincts to our passion we love to do.
