My favorite poem that I read was “The Lanyard” by Billy Collins. I liked this poem the best because of its ironic nature. Verbal irony if done right can be hilarious in my opinion and I believe that this poem did a good job at delivering it. My favorite word used in the poem would be archaic. Archaic is an adjective and its definition basically means that something is very old. My favorite line in the poem is “And here’ I said, ‘is the lanyard I made at camp”(Collins). This line is my favorite because the lines before set this one up nicely as a line bursting with verbal irony.
The chapter that stuck out the most to me was Mango Says Goodbye Sometimes. This one stuck out to me the most because it was the last one in the entire book. All I could think about when reading it was how good of an ending it was. It seemed to wrap up the entire book extremely well. My favorite part of this chapter was “for each step my brown shoe takes, I say “And so she trudged up the wooden stairs, her sad brown shoes taking her to the house she never liked”(Cisneros 109). I like this line because it sums up her writing style very well. She’s as descriptive as an HD photo and filled to the brim with figurative language.

I was trying to come up with something better but this is all I could think about posting.
The “Remove Before Flight” key tag is what my dad used to have when he was a
flight paramedic. It reminds me of everything he’s done for me and how he’s helped me so
far in life.

I completely agree with you saying that if verbal irony is done right it can be the funniest thing ever. The Lanyard was my favorite poem as well because of its ironic and sarcastic nature. The last chapter of The House on Mango Street didn't stick out to me as much as it did to you, but I agree that it was a great and unexpected ending to her story. I think the key tag is a super cool memento your dad gave you, it's awesome he's done so much for you. Does he have any stories from being a flight paramedic?
ReplyDeleteI’m pretty sure that The Lanyard is everybody’s favorite poem. It is not like your traditional poem that was fancy phrases and themes of love. It was ironic and witty, something that took me by surprise. The last chapter of Mango Street is also my favorite too. It leaves you on a incredible note that will stay with you for a very long time.
ReplyDeleteI liked "The Lanyard" as well. I like you picked your example of the lanyard. My aunt is also a flight paramedic so there is come connection there.
