Journal 7

A person in my life that I would say has the most passion and purpose for what they do would be my dad. My dad started off not knowing what he wanted to do. He went to college for a year, worked at becoming a chef, and he also was a trucker for 5 years. Then after many different jobs he found his calling or his purpose which is being a handyman. I think he got the inspiration from my grandpa because that's what he did for a living as well. My dad just fixes and does jobs around peoples houses whether it be roofing or putting in a water heater. My dad started to re-do our house a couple years ago all by himself so he would be at work from 7-3 then come home and work till 10 or 11 at night. He also is the middle school wrestling coach which takes up a lot of time as well. He said this was his last year when I was done wrestling, but he’s still at it and he also is thinking about becoming the golf coach as well. My dad just likes to do things with his hands and have something to do. He doesn’t like to sit around; he always has to be working on something. This year he also got back into gardening since he had free time. He’s just an all around good guy and someone I look up too.

The purpose of the introduction of Callings is to one help us understand what this book is going to be about and how the author Dave Isay got the idea for his calling. I learned from the introduction that you can do any job that you want to if you put in the time and effort. This guy has a career in talking about people's careers. It's pretty cool and you can tell that he really enjoys his work. The introduction wants to help anyone trying to find their calling and that they can do it if they try. It is a good message and it made me step and think if I want to continue to be an Athletic Director or not which I still think I do.

My favorite of the four passages would have to be about the NBA Referee. This is such a unique profession that not many people do. He said that only 60 people in the world get to call themselves a ref in the NBA. I also like how supportive his dad was with his decisions with what he wanted to be. It’s good to have a support system in your life and he clearly had that which helped him get where he wanted to be. Now that I know who he is I am going to look for him when I watch NBA games from now on and it will give me a perspective of who the refs are. Most people just get mad at the refs if they make a bad call and they don’t think of them as people. Kind of like the point that Maurice brought up in his book about the college athletes.

  1. Hey mason i think that is very interesting that your dad has done many things especially the truck driver because most people dont realize that its a hard job, having to drive many hours gets very tiring and probably very stressful. It seems like your father always has something on his plate to do weather its coaching or fixing something it reminds me of my father he is also very hands on with stuff and just finds enjoyment in doing so.

  2. Hi Mason, your dad is definitely a hard worker it seems like he always likes to keep busy and productive, I think that is a really good trait to have, and its something I'm always trying to work towards and strive to be. I didn't pick the profile about the NBA referee but it was a fun one to read. Something I noted in the chapter was how his mother wasn't as supportive as his father. I think a lot of parents today try and push their kids to do something that guarantees a good salary, benefits, and vacation but I believe that people need to start evaluating what it means to have a job and the kinds of jobs you can get that will give you more purpose and passion than a job that just pays well.
