Journal 7: Callings 1st Connections

Someone I know personally that has a real passion and purpose for what they do is my Dad. My dad has been a soccer coach since 1982, coaching in Ohio for five different high schools and three different private clubs winning many awards such as state champions, coach’s awards, winning tournaments, etc. He also coached in Alabama when he was station there for the Army but that’s for different reasons. Although he has been coaching for so long he does not do this full time simply because it does not pay enough for the lifestyle we live but trust me when I say I have never seen a better, more passionate and knowledgeable coach than my dad. I have yet to meet someone who has changed kids’ lives simply by being their coach.

The introduction of Callings was insightful to what the following chapters are going to be about but he specifically focuses on his wife’s ob-gyn. Which I thought was interesting but also seemed strange because of how random it felt. Like when you think of someone who is inspiring and someone that is important to you it just wouldn’t have been my first thought but it made me think about those outside of the idea of like doctors or lawyers even im sure there are great lawyers and doctor’s out there it just seems to always be the first answer but this kind of pushed that envelope.

My favorite of the four profiles had to have been the Forensic Artist, Sharon Long. When reading this chapter I already had some idea on this type of artist mainly that it connected to rebuilding and structuring of the face or body using a type of artist which is what she was and excelled at. Sharon actually does not start doing this until much later in her life talking about how she thought she was too old and couldn’t go back to college but while getting her kids registered for their college the financial aid lady helped Sharon get started (Isay 22). What I connected to most be not her getting to college but what she did after finding her niche which her work. She later talks about how she is really just gifted at her work and can’t explain how she does it. Sharon says “I really don’t know how I do it; it just comes out of the tips of my fingers. But I do observe a lot. I watch people pretty closely in restaurants, in airports, people I work with. If you look closely, you’ll notice one eye might droop a little more at one side, or the nose will be up a little higher on the other side.” (Isay 24-25). As a photographer I do the exact same thing but with composition. Always looking at what the best picture may be even if I am not taking photos at that very moment. It is just something my brain is always doing.

2003 Olentangy Liberty Boys Varsity Soccer team. My dad is the head coach on the left and on the right is my great uncle (his uncle) Orlando who is his assistant coach but also an amazing player himself.

  1. It sounds like your dad is a great coach. My dad is also a coach which is pretty neat. It is cool to see how these people can change kids lives and have such an huge impact just by teaching them how to play a sport. I also agree with what you said about the introduction about callings. The forensic scientist story was very cool. There some person in my economics class who is like 50 going to school. Sometimes you get tired of what you're doing and want to go back to school.

  2. Hey marina I think that is so cool that your father coach in many different clubs and organzations. It seems like he is a good guy because coaching isnt always easy you are always going to have kids who dont wanna act right and or do what they are told. Its good to hear that he likes helping people out and teaching people new things on the field and im sure he always giving you lessons like if you were a kid on his team.

  3. Hi Marina! I think it's awesome your dad is a soccer coach. Since your father coaches, did he ever play soccer as well? I also agree that Sharon Long was my favorite profile as well. I think her determination and creativity really showed us she cared about her job!

    1. Hi Haily! Yes, my dad did play soccer growing up so he has years and years of many experiences but I also think he has a natural talent for all sports and anything athletic.

  6. Your dad seems like an awesome coach, I wrote about my cousin coaching basketball. I played soccer throughout my life as well and I loved my coach. I always have wondered what it would be like if I had a different one.
