Journal Seven
The person that first came to mind when I read this prompt was my mother. She is a NP/PA at the OSU James Center working in oncology. She is a very hard working person I remember when I was younger she would be studying and working hard every single day for years straight staying up past midnight studying to do good and get her title. She has now been working at the hospital for a little over 10 years and before that she worked at riverside treating and helping everyday from 8 am to around 5pm. I believe what led her be this committed was the fact she came from a bad part of Cleveland, OH and wanted to prove to her mother and father that she could move down to Columbus to be a successful person and that she wanted to be in medical field to help people.
The introduction of Callings was to explain to us that the author at first to show us that sometimes the more common things in life aren't always what you want to do. He was on his way to medical school which is a very big deal I think personally because they are people help others get healthier and become better. He had withdrawn from medical school to be on public radio. In my book that is something very risky because are going from something so prestige's to this, this could have changed his life forever but he had loved it and the most out of it which made the author successful in life. I learned you are not always going to want to do what you plan to do and it can change in a second.
My favorite story out of the four was A Street Corner Astronomer. I feel like this one really changed my point on view on type of jobs. This guy had got a degree in elementary education in general science but then just decided he didn't want to be a teacher due to his disabilities. I learned from this even after getting a degree you still might not want to even do that in the future, but you must find something you like to do or you are going to end up like this guy going through a new job every few years and trying so hard to want it but you just don't. I think the main factors were that he starting reading books at a young age which he was already into astronomy as the text states, "Eventually at the age of 15 , I leaned on my father to get me a telescope, and Ive just been with it ever since. Astronomy-its just me"(Isay 12). This made me realize sometimes its the things when you were younger you like and you dont realize it because everyone's so caught up in the main stream jobs and fitting and being like everyone else. This guy started to just go out and have people come out and look through his telescope and ever since then he fell in love with how s many people were amazed some even said it wasnt real because of how clear it was.

Imagine seeing this through a telescope, I think the planets are something very cool to look at
Its good to hear you talk about your mom again you guys have a good bond. It sounds like she is a very hardworking person and a good role model. I was born at Riverside hospital which I thought it was cool that your mom worked there. I also liked that story it's a very unique career to have. I feel like he is the only person in the world that can say he's a street corner astronomer.
ReplyDeleteHi Andrew, after hearing so much about your mom she really seems like a genuine person who really cares about everyone she encounters and it is nice to hear those stories of people who work tirelessly to get where they are and from this I can tell she is very hardworking person. I also liked the story you chose as well but I think the most important part that came out of it was his relationship with his dad and how encouraging he was with supporting his sons dreams. Especially since it seemed like his mom wasn't too hooked on the idea of what he wanted to do.
