Journal 6

I definitely liked One and Done By Maurice Clarett more than The House on Mango Street. I couldn’t put the book done and found myself doing all the reading in one sitting. I really like sports and I want to have them in my future in some way whether that be coaching or just anything. Meeting a well-known football player and getting to ask him questions was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am going to remember that for a long time.

One takeaway that I got from the book is that college athletes are people too. When I watch sports it’s hard to think that they are people. Maurice in the book made me open my eyes to this. I found myself switching up and not liking a player because they weren’t doing very well. The person I think of was Alex Hornibrook from Wisconsin. I have been a Wisconsin fan since I was young and Wisconsin is not known for their quarterbacks except for Russell Wilson. So usually they are pretty bad and Alex Hornibrook was no exception. Just a mediocre quarterback who threw so many interceptions. He then transferred to Florida State and didn’t get much playing time and I was pretty happy about it. I never thought of him as a person and didn’t wish him success and just as a player and not a person.

Another takeaway from the book that I got was that major companies will do anything to keep a good image. When they decided to take the painting down of Maurice because he went to prison it makes you think of what other things they might be trying to hide. Another thing that is on the same page of this is when Maurice talked about the media making him seem like a bad person. People will do anything to keep their image and they will also do anything to ruin people’s image as well.

The biggest takeaway from the zoom call that I got was that you need to find a routine and stick with it. Ever since he got out of prison he has stuck to a routine and had a plan to get him where he is now. He gets up very early to run and get his mind right and what he has to do that day. His vision of where he wants to go keeps him going so he can be a contributing member of society.

  1. After I read the book, I began thinking of these players as human beings. How they are being used as sources of entertainment and money and for recognition. It’s really sad when you take it from a new and different perspective.

  2. Hey mason, I agree with you when he got into that routine in prison it made him a more productive person and now that he still able to do that makes want to start getting up early and feeling more accomplished by getting into the right routine.
