Snapshot One: My Name

My name, Marina, it comes from Russia, it means from the sea. My parents chose to pick it from the Latin Origin, it means of the sea. My brothers chose to pick it from English language, it means a harbor for small boats. They chose to call me Marina, and I chose to hate it. You think of Marina you may think of water, sea, boating dock even. I think of Marina and I think grimy, salty, and a sunken boat.

Ryan, give me the name Ryan. That’s my middle name, my dad claims he wanted to call me that but I think he is the little boy who cries wolf.  Not only does it take a blue moon for teachers to pronounce my name right during roll call but sometimes it’s even worse, my name will never be on keychains.

People would ask my mom if she had a girl what would her name be? She said Marina. They said, “Well, I hope she’s beautiful, because with a name like Marina, she should look like royalty. “. Do you know how much pressure that puts on a child that isn’t even born? That’s right, none. Because I have yet to understand what’s happening. But now I understand, I hope I meet their expectations.

I tried to get people to call me by Ryan, Mina, Mari, Merna, Marinara anything but Marina. Luckily, it worked, because these are all my names, of course it depends on who you ask. With my long list of names at the end of the day it’s Marina Ryan Siles. I still don’t like it but maybe something like boating dock would be better. Yes. Something like boating dock will do.

  4. Hi Marina, I really like your name. I think it's beautiful. My name also comes from Russia. I'm sorry you don't like your name, we all have our reasons for not liking them. I can see why you think of a grimy salty ocean, but oceans can be beautiful and full of life. I hope your name grows on you as you get older because it's different but pretty. I can relate to you when you said your name is mispronounced during roll call in class, my name always gets mispronounced. I enjoyed getting to learn more about you.
