My active reading is going really good so far. In high school I didn't really write little notes and highlight stuff in my books so it's a little different. It is helping a lot though which I think is good. I get really distracted when I read so it takes a little longer than I would like it to. Some things I don't really comprehend so I might re read it a few times to get a better understanding of what it is trying to say.
One thing I don't like about this book compared to the house on mango street is that the pages are longer with a lot more words. It just gives me this sense that I have to read so much more. I can relate to the book one and done a little bit when he plays football and works hard. But in my case I played soccer and just made it a grind and worked so hard everyday and it all eventually paid off and I got a lot of trophies and awards. What I do like about the house on mango street is that the pages are really short and it is just way easier to read in my opinion. I have already read this book my senior year if high school so I am already really familiar with it.
I have a question about why did Maurice Clarett Mother and Grandparents not stop him from getting in trouble and getting into crime. At the young age he was drinking and trying out drugs. When he also got paddled at school. Why didn't they stop him from doing that. He loved playing sports so they could've been like you don't get to play for a week if you don't behave. Personally this is what I would have done because I think that would work really good. Maurice was so good on the field and had already proved himself. He skipped his senior hear of high school, He failed his ACT and got a 13. But he passed when he took the SAT. He did say he cheated off of the girls test that was next to him. I just think this is kinda crazy. He got an offer from a BIG 10 school and he hasn't even started his senior year.
In high school I didn’t really take notes or anything when reading a book but it is very helpful. I can relate with you and how you relate to One and Done on how you were motivated with football i was motivated during track season to do good in my races. It is crazy how he got an offer from a big ten school but he was really good at football and yes his grades weren’t the best but some schools don’t necessarily look at that if you are really good at sports.
ReplyDeleteFor me it can be really hard to pay attention to a book and not lose focus, especially with annotating. Sometimes when I take a break to annotate I will lose focus on what point I was at in the book and forget what was happening before. I've been trying to fix this by really taking my time and re-reading things I didn't understand. I also agree with your point about how One and Done's chapters are long and filled with text. Looking through how much I have to read can be very intimidating.
ReplyDeleteFor me in high school, I never really actively read books, I always read the part I was supposed to, then put the book down. I didn't take time we read closely to search for themes or figurative language. From reading your question, I think Clarett's Mom was so busy to try and make money to support her and her kids, that she didn't have time to be focused on what kind of trouble her kids were getting into. There was only one house income for the four of them and that was only from his mom since the dad had left. I don't know why his grandparents didn't try and keep him out of trouble.
ReplyDeleteI think it is really cool that you read The House On Mango Street in high school because it is a pretty easy read but now you can get a different perspective on it and different thing you can note that you may have missed or didn't realize before which I think is really cool. And also now having to highlight and write in the book I would think that it is like you are reading it for the first time.
