Mango Street and Me

To start off strong, the chapter that has had the biggest connection to me in The House on Mango Street is “A Rice Sandwich”. The synopsis of this chapter is that Esperanza wants to eat lunch at school, specifically she wants to eat lunch in the canteen. To eat lunch in the canteen she would need her mother to pack a lunch for her. Esperanza’s mother was hesitant at first, but after a few days of begging. Esperanza’s mother gave in and packed her lunch. When Esperanza brought her lunch and note into school she was sent to Sister Superior’s office. She believed that Esperanza did live too far away. Sister Superior asked to see where Esperanza lived. In the book this is what was said “That one? She said, pointing to a row of ugly three-flats, the ones even the raggedy men are ashamed to go into. Yes, I nodded even though I knew that wasn’t my house and started to cry”(Cisneros 45). After that Sister Superior apologized, and allowed her to eat in the canteen for that day but only that day.

This chapter reminds me of my own life because my younger sister packs her lunch for school. One day this year one of my parents took her to school, and I guess she forgot her lunch at home. I was still asleep at home and then I was woken up by a phone call by my little sister crying begging me to bring her lunch to her. I got out of bed and took her lunch to her as soon as possible so that she wouldn’t worry about it. Then I went home and got back in bed.

This picture is of an electric guitar my dad gave me. He bought it back in 87’ or 88’, I forget which. I’ve tried playing guitar multiple times and I’ve given up multiple times. It’s just something I’ve never really gotten into. I’m not exactly instrumentally inclined, but it's still fun to try to play every now and then. Either way he’s in great health, so it's not a final memento of his or anything. It’s something I wouldn’t sell or give to anyone outside of my family.

  1. It was interesting you connected this chapter to your sister. She was probably just as embarrassed as Esperanza was not having a lunch to eat at school! It was really nice of you to wake up and bring her her lunch, I'm sure she really appreciated you doing that for her. The guitar is super cool, I can play the violin and a little but of the cello, but I honestly wouldn't say I'm instrumentally inclined either. Does your dad know how to play the guitar?

  2. I admire how you connected with Cisneros and it was sweet on what you did with your younger sister I value things like that deeply. Shows the love you have for family. The guitar looks really nice! the fact that it remembers you of your dad makes it really special. Even if you don't know how to play it it's nice to still have it.

  3. I liked how you tied your sister into to it also it was sweet of you to bring her the lunch she forgot. It is stressful when you forget anything for school at home and you have no way to get it to the school. I bet she felt the same way Esperanza did when she had nothing to eat at school. It feels embarrassing and they feeling is never a good feeling I know I don’t like being embarrassed at school or anywhere.
