The House on Mango Street—and You, Too

To begin the first question asked is “Which chapter so far has made the biggest connection to your own experience (perhaps it reminded you the most of something or someone in your own experience)?” In my reading of the book, the chapter that I most connected to in the reading was “Our Good Day”. The reason I connected with this chapter so much was for the fact that in my experiences during my youth, the time I spent with friends was best spent sharing an experience together. This is shared to us readers in “Our Good Day” which starts off with the promise her new neighbors offer, for five dollars Esperanza and what will soon become her two best friends want to buy a bicycle off of Tito. The girls promise to become her friend if she helps them purchase the bike so that they can all share in the fun it will surely bring. Everyone wants the first spin on something new maybe a game or a new car but for these girls, it was a used bike. “But everybody wants to ride it today because the bike is new, so we decide to take turns after tomorrow. Today it belongs to all of us.” (Sandra Cisneros, 15) This quote explains how the group came to a unanimous decision to all share in the first experience on the bike. The events that take place after this quote involve the group all saddling up to ride the aluminum pony. Soon they are situated and start off on their good day out on the town riding past many a house and person. Taking in the sights and just enjoying themselves. They even get a comment from a lady on the street expressing that they are really bogging down their ride. But being young kids, they are quick to throw that weight right back at the heavy-set lady. Soon they are off again “Laughing the crooked ride back.”. (Sandra Cisneros, 16)

This story closely relates to the fun times that I would often indulge in while I and my brother played with our neighbors. I and my brother would often go to our close friends’ house to either play games or test out new things. It just so happens that during the day I recollect that our neighbors had just bought a new Xbox 360 that was bundled with an interesting game. Soon I and my brother having received the word were on our way over to their house I believe on foot that day since we had outgrown our bikes at the time. Soon we gave our greetings, put our shoes in the usual spot, and we were fully on our way slipping the disc in to start our adventure. At first, it was me and Caleb the older brother playing while the younger boys watched in awe. Soon we were shooting, punching, and jumping our way through the level. Dying who knows how many times and just laughing at the circumstances of said deaths. Soon it was time to switch and the younger boys Mason and Camden got there turn. This would go on like this for hours till there was dim sunlight peeking through the blinds. So yes, sharing an experience we can all enjoy was always important to me.

This is my first ever Xbox 360. I got this system for Christmas when I was 11 and it has a ton of memories from playing with friends at my place late at night. To system link parties at other people's houses. It now has problems closing the disc tray and reading games and even has a bit of dust on it but I will keep it until the end.

  1. That's a great item you chose for this. I also used to have a Xbox 360 when I was younger and can remember all the good time my friends and I had on it. Moving throughout the years all my friends and I still continue to play together but on pc now. I also used to play with my neighbors when I was a kid as week. It's cool to see that you are very close to your brother and your neighbors and I bet that was a lot of fun playing with them.

  2. I also agree with mason that is a very good choice to pick, I remember my first ever console was a PS2 and wow I haad some good memories also then my PS3. A a young kid you really connect with you first console because it was always the days you come home from school then play all night with yout friends. I miss the days with all the times you brought console over to your friends and just play all night with them in the same room. What was you favorite game to play growing up as a kid?

  3. I have to agree with Mason and Andrew on this, this was a great item to choose in fact it was something I was about to use for my blog post. My first console was an Xbox 360 as well and it was my gateway into gaming and playing with friends online. Something for me that makes my gaming pc and consoles so priceless is that, they are an escape for me and its always carried me through tough times and I will always remember the memories I've made online with friends.

  4. I appreciate the story that you shared from your childhood. It reminds me of the times when I was younger being the younger brother that watched "in awe" while my older brother and his friend played. Seeing the post brought back deep memories that I forgot I had.
