A chapter that I found myself connecting to in The House on Mango Street is in the fourth chapter. In the chapter, My Name, Esperanza talks about the meaning of her name, which means hope in English, but also sadness in Spanish. She got it from her great-grandmother, someone who was, as Esperanza put it, “…a wild horse of a woman, so wild she wouldn’t marry.” (Cisneros 11). Yet one day, her great-grandfather married her and took away her identity. Ever since then, she looked out a window as she leaned on one elbow in sadness. Esperanza went on to say that she did not want to be like her great-grandmother.
This brown leather journal is where I started brainstorming my ideas. It was from this journal where my ideas came to life. Even though I am not using it anymore, I will one day keep it in a memorabilia.
Hi Jack! I like the connection you made about identity. Hearing that you found yourself through creative writing thanks to a teacher is amazing and I love to hear stories like that. I kind of had a similar experience during my first two years of high school and luckily, our school had a well supported arts departments and that's really where I found myself. I think you should definitely use that journal throughout your life I think it would be so cool to look back on if its full.
ReplyDeleteHello Jack, I enjoyed reading your blog post it made me think about how and when did I find my identity, and that is something I've never really thought about before, and to be honest, I don't know yet, and its something I'm definitely going to be thinking about. I like how you use a journal as well to brainstorm ideas its something I never got into doing but I've always thought about starting.
ReplyDeleteHey Jack, I like how you talked about finding your identity and relating the chapter to a personal experience. I believe that everyone goes through trying to find themselves and their personal identity. I think your passion is interesting and almost eclectic in its own way. By storytelling is it written down almost as a book or is it more of a verbal storytelling?
ReplyDeleteIt’s a full on book.
