Snapshot

It’s December 14th, 2001. My mom is in labor about to give birth. They’ve had months to prepare for this moment. As my mom is about to give the final push that will be my introduction to this world. Minutes go by and my mom gives the last big push and everyone in the room was ecstatic since my mom gave birth to a healthy baby. As the doctor is holding the baby he looks at my dad and asks “ what will his name be?” My dad looks at him and hesitates for a second. Almost like he had forgotten the name him and my mom had agreed on. It’s so quiet you could hear a cat’s prowl. My dad finally looks up at the doctor and replies…”Mason.”

Growing up I have been pretty lucky. I was the second born into my family. Always lived in the same house, same town and been around the same people. My family loves to give the name Thomas out to their children. For example everyone in my family has the name Thomas as follows: my dad, my grandpa, my uncle, my great grandpa and my brother's middle name is Thomas. So being one of the only people on my dad’s side of the family is pretty weird. When we go places and they ask for the name Thomas every turns their head asking which one. So, it would be cool to have the same name as my dad and grandpa, but it gives me the opportunity to make something out of my name. Having people be happy when they say my name from the good things I’ve done. Maybe even passing it on to my own kids one day. So, overall I like my name and I think it will let me make a name for myself . Not being known as just another Thomas. If you want to call me by a nickname. Yes. Something like Mace will do.

  1. Lots of Thomas, just reminds me of the Train on TV. Made sure to respond to yours because I had yet to see a comment. But very glad you got Mason seems to stand out not only in your family but also from others. I have met two Masons in my life and they have been polar opposites. Glad to see this trend continue. Hope you put some more meaning behind your name in the future, and hope you having fun teasing all the Thomas's in your life!

  2. I think it is so cool that the guys in the family all had the name Thomas passed down but I also think the choice your parents had to break the link makes your name even better. Like you get to write your own life with this name and not the continuation of Thomas, but as Mason.
