House On Mango Street Reflection
So far throughout book The House On Mango street I have made a connection with surprisingly only the first chapter of the story, It really reminded me of my own life at point in time.
In this Chapter the author talks about how there are consistently moving houses. Cisneros had always wanted to finally live in a real house she has never felt that feeling from there continuous moving as in the text she states," They always told us that one day we would move into a house, a real house that would be ours for always so we wouldn't have to move each year"(Cisneros 4). This is really how I felt too I just wanted to be in my own place. The reason I have a connection with this is that when I was growing up I lived in a house, but my family was always moving. I had always met new friends but then it felt like only after a year I would have to move on. Finally when I was in middle school after our like fourth time moving in only three years we finally settled somewhere that I can call home now. The only thing that separates Cisneros and I though is that she didn't like the house on mango street she didn't think it was it, but I on the other finally realized I can stay with my friends here and grow up with people for the first time in my life.
Andrew, thanks for getting us started! I enjoyed hearing about your connection to the feeling of being transient, and moving to new schools and neighborhoods. It is for sure huge for kids to have to move, and of course it can go in many directions.
ReplyDeleteLove the pic of the ring and it made me wonder if the memories that are associated with the ring are the best thing? What is your strongest memory from that time in your life?
Yes that time in my life when I got that ring was probably the best time in my life, we stayed with a billet family for about close to 2 weeks so we got super close with a family that lived in a whole another country. Its just something you cant forget playing in front of thousands of people, they closed the schools in quebec city just so they could watch the teams play in the area. I was playing in front of thousands of people so you could probably imagine how nervous I was. You could ask me anything about that trip I could tell you anything. Something that really changed my life sometimes hard to put into words.
DeleteWords can only go so far, but they do an amazing job of letting us share important experiences. I guessed that it was a human connection that was behind it, a family, the relationship, the memories. What a great time in your life and totally worth remembering and totally worth writing about. Thanks for the reply and have a great weekend!
DeleteIt was cool listening to your accomplishments in hockey that must've been a great time in your life. That's a pretty cool looking ring with the Blue Jackets logo on it. I can only imagine how it feels moving from house to house though since I've lived in the same house my whole life. great connection between you and Cisneros it was a pleasure to read.
ReplyDeleteI love the connection you made with Cisneros and you moving a lot. It's a unique connection that not many people can make. I definitely cannot say I've moved four times in three years, that's crazy! Why did you and your family have to move so much? I've moved once and it was when I was three years old, but other than that I've lived in the same house my entire life! I can totally connect to you and the sentimental value of sports awards. Mine are 100% not as cool as a championship ring, but my track medals and soccer trophies have priceless memories attached to them that I could never part with!
ReplyDeleteIt was usually just cause my parents wanted to live different places sometimes because of there work but I am not 100% sure I have never really asked why
DeleteI think it was intresting how you moved all over for your life. I can assume it was hard, I had a friend myself who moved all over the US with her family. If I may ask, where states have you lived?
ReplyDeleteI have only lived in Ohio but just moved around it
DeleteI respect the connection in which you have with Cisneros, I did too can relate to that chapter in which I moved in order to find a better lifestyle with my family. It is not easy but glad to hear you can call home to the place you live right now and that you are happy with it too. The ring looks really cool, it shows the amount of work you've placed in order to get the ring and I admire and respect that.
