                                                            Journal Three:

My active reading is going well I think. Where I'm doing well is making personal connections to some characters. Like I can visualize when something is happening and I can imagine how it looks and everything around it. I think what is not going as well is noticing themes. I can't pinpoint when there is a theme in a story. I'm trying to work on it though.

When it comes to both books, I relate more to the Cisneros book. Only because of reading it, I can relate to somethings personally. Clarett's book is a little hard for me but it's not difficult. The only thing I'm relating to in Clarett's book is feeling bad when losing a game. As an athlete, I can understand the pain and discouragement whenever I lost a game while playing Fastpitch.

One question I had from Clarett's book was his brothers involved in the scene of Youngstown at that time as well? If they saw or knew Clarett was getting into trouble, why couldn't they have done more for him? Or at least try to help him? It seems so far that the brothers are hardly around Clarett. And what I noticed most was in Chapter Four is how focused he was at this point. He kept track of all his scores and points and how he played, wins and losses. I thought it was something important and impressive coming from a young high school student. I liked at the end when he said, "I was as focused then as I am in my life right now". It shows how hard he worked and is still working as hard.

  1. I too am some difficultly with pointing out the themes, especially in Clarett’s Memoir.

    1. It's difficult to me because there is so much going on in the story, it's hard to pinpoint.

  2. I related to the pain and discouragement from Clarett as well as you did. Losing special games in soccer, or having a bad race in track would put me down. But just like him, it made me work harder at the next practice to be even better at the next game and meet. Did this also make you want to work harder the next chance you got?

    1. Yes 100%! It made me have this "fire" when I played the next game, and then I would do well for myself and I helped my team stay encouraged and we usually won!

  3. I agree with what you talked about when trying to relate to Clarett's book, knowing the idea of losing but his whole life in general I can't personally relate to. I too also have trouble pointing out themes that happen.

    1. Yes, I only specifically agree with losing games, and keeping record of it in my head!

  5. When Clarett was keeping track of his own stats and playing a game at the same time is pretty impressive. I don't know of that many people that would do that for even themselves. When he says that he is still focused I believe it.

  6. Hi Haily, I think you asked a good question. I am also wondering if his brothers were involved much with what was going on around Youngstown. I personally relate more to One and Done, but I can agree with you on how losing a game can be discouraging because I know when I played soccer, it's frustrating when you know you could've done better or done something differently.
