Journal Three
My active reading so far has been going well. I highlight things that I think are important on almost every page. So far I haven’t any connections with Cisneros. I don’t really relate to this book very much my life is a little different than hers. In the book One and Done I cant relate to some the things in this book more than Cisneros. I just have gone through some of the rough patches like he did when he was younger. It is really hard for me to understand books and get through them fast. That’s the only thing I really am struggling with while reading these books. Also I’m reading another novel in a different class so that puts me too reading three books at once it is a lot to do but I’m getting through it. The things going well with reading these books is that they aren’t boring they are entertaining to me and I’m not bored reading them.
My weaknesses in One and Done are that it is kinda hard to understand everything going on it the book. I just is so much Information in just one chapter it is hard to comprehend all the important parts in the book. My strengths in One and Done are that I can relate to some parts in the book so that makes it a little easier to understand. My weaknesses in Cisneros are that I don’t relate to the book really so it is harder to understand. My strengths in Cisneros are that I understand this book a lot more it’s a lot easier to keep up with everything happening. I definitely prefer Cisneros a lot more than One and Done just because I understand it a lot more than the other book.
The question I’ve had about Clarett is that why did his mom never try to get him on the right track to be successful? Something that I thought was important was how he was very motivated to be successful in football and never has wanted to be so motivated with something like this before. He has always been determined with other activities and the bad things he has done. Football was a different level of success for him even when he got hurt he still wanted to be successful he didn’t want to give up.
I don't have any connections to Cisneros either, which makes me like Clarett's book more. I completely understand how you can relate to his book, and I'm sorry you went through similar rough patches. I have the same weakness in One and Done as you, he talks so much about his games that it's kind of hard to keep up with them. I also had the same exact question about why his mom never tried to get him on the right track out of criminality. She worked a lot, but it seemed like she was oblivious to the fact that her boys were out in the streets causing trouble.
ReplyDeleteIt is funny that you had the exact opposite problem that I am having. I really feel like I comprehend what is happening in One and Done but I really have trouble understanding Cisneros. Although I do understand how you have trouble getting through Maurice’s writings because yes he does throw a lot of information at you. I feel you may just have trouble keeping up it perhaps because of the way he presents his information especially in chapters four and five where he is recollecting his high school career going over every football game in summary detail then moving onto another. I got lost myself trying to figure out at which school did he do what. So I completely understand when you say that it is a lot. I also like your question and had the same question myself after reading chapters two and three. I just figured that trying to support Maurice and his brothers was putting her though lots of 50 to 60 hour weeks just to make ends meet. However Maurice never mentions in too much detail how much his mother was doing for him. So I. guess it is just up to us readers to infer what she was doing behind the scenes.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your post Bri, I understand how you don't have much of a connection/relation to the book and the stories that take place. For me it can be hard to relate the big picture that is being portrayed, but throughout the book I do find myself relating to these smaller passages like in Darius and The Clouds. In this chapter, Darius points up at the sky and talks about how the cloud up there looks like god. I can remember from my childhood that I would use to say stuff like this to my friends to scare them because I would say god is watching you right now because a cloud looked like god.
