Journal Two - Marina Siles

 Journal Two

Hello, my name is Marina Siles and I am from Lewis Center, Ohio. I graduated from Olentangy Orange High School. In school I was very involved in the arts. I was in choir and took advanced photography which helped me get scholarships and awards. My dad is from Bolivia which is in South America and I am a first generation college student. I also have two older brothers, Skyler and Rio. A fun fact about myself is I have been downhill skiing since I was six and cross country skiing since I was 12. Although I don’t get to experience really good hills or mountains here in Ohio or the general Midwest, going out west is my favorite part of skiing.

In the House On Mango Street a theme that stood out to me was in the introduction, Sandra, spoke about herself in a certain manner. Using the phrase “The young women in the photograph…” even after introducing herself. But after the introduction she started to tell it more as a story that she was telling. Rather than a story she was telling about someone else. I think that this shows how she may view herself and how she thinks others view her. It is typical to think of ourselves in a negative way, which I noticed was how she saw herself too. She says, “We do this with no capital except our valuable time. We do this because the world we live in is a house on fire and the people we love are burning.” (Pg. 18). I chose this one because of how she used her words, the house being on fire yet nobody can be saved, so why continue to do this? It really had me thinking for a second about how she really feels about what she is doing.

  1. Hi there Marina! I always wanted to go skiing when I was in middle school. I bet the skiing out west is exhilarating! I do not run cross country but i leave all of the running to my younger brother.

Can’t wait to hear more about you in the future!
