Journal Two andrew vidrick

Journal two

My name is Andrew Vidrick, I am 18 years old and I was born in Ohio. I attended Olentangy Liberty High school all four years. I have been playing hockey since I was four years old and might continue to play for the club team at OSU. I have two brothers, Alec who is 27 and graduated from OSU a few years ago and Anthony who is 19 and is playing junior hockey in Canada. My mother is a NP/PA at OSU James center and my father is a computer programmer. When I was in 7th grade I went to Quebec, Canada and won a world championship with over 100 teams there. I lived with my brother with another family for over two weeks, they gave us food, shelter, and rides to our games.

A theme that stood out to me the most was poverty. In the story it takes about how they dreamed about having a big lawn, trees, Tv’s, and at least three bathrooms. This family has been living in broken down places with leaking pipes and landlords always banging their doors and boarded up windows. When they moved to the house on Mango Street it was small, one bedroom for 6 people, a door that you have to push hard to open. I feel like this is important as its describing the situation they are living in and puts a scenery in my head of what it looks like. I have seen this with my own eyes first hand as I’m walking through downtown Columbus, there are people living in the streets barely surviving or people living in broken down houses making minimum wage just trying to support their families. It’s important me because we need to help these kind of people everyone deserves chances to succeed and some people just need some guidance to get them started. A sentence that stood out to me was when the author states, “Until then I am a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor. Esperanza is talking about best friends in this chapter and saying how she doesn’t really have one, the life she wants, is pending and will not come unless she has a real friend she keeps wishing for. I chose this because I understand where Esperanza's coming from and how she feels like shes tied down to someone not being able to find someone who’s just like you and understands everything you say.

  1. Hi Andrew, I think it's really cool that you do so much with hockey, I love the sport. And it is pretty impressive going to Canada in 7th grade to compete against that many teams and then winning. I also agree with the theme you picked, not only have I also seen it in Columbus but also when I went to Chicago, just driving through the neighborhoods. I think it is important that we look outside of where we live to understand the reality some people face on a daily.

  3. Hi Andrew, I have never really taken the time to watch hockey, but I find it fascinating that you got the chance to play in another country. Your dog is absolutely adorable. I agree with the theme you picked, in the book poverty plays a big part. While reading you’re able to tell her family struggles with money by the way she describes the places she has previously lived. I like how you took poverty and compared it to Columbus because I have also walked downtown Columbus and have seen the broken down homes and people living on the streets. Columbus isn’t the only place I’ve seen it occur, San Fransico and Chigaco also have a lot of people living in poverty. Overall I think you made a good point.
