Journal Two

Hi, my name is Aubrey. I’m from Lewis Center, Ohio. I currently am commuting from home to Marion. I work at an ice cream shop on Polaris that is owned by one of my best friend’s dad. I have an older brother who lives in Columbus that also goes to Ohio State, and my mother also went there as well. In high school I ran track and I competed in the 300 meter hurdles. I competed in every invitational for my school, districts and OCCs.

In The House on Mango Street, a theme that stood out to me was embarrassment. The author seemed to hate her new house, especially when her teacher used a tone in which she was surprised at her living circumstances. “There. I had to look where she pointed – the third floor, the paint peeling, wooden bars Papa had nailed on the windows so we wouldn’t fall out.” I chose this quote because it says a lot about Esperanza and her feelings towards her home and living circumstance. I don’t necessarily experience this often, but it’s just a sense of belonging sometimes that could lead to embarrassment. I feel this is important because it went along with how much she despised her name and how her siblings also has bad names in her eyes, but they could at least use nicknames. “Magdalena who at least can come home and become Nenny. But I am always Esperanza.”

  1. Hello Aubrey my name is Mason. I am also commuting from my house to Marion for school. I don't have as far of a drive though I think since I'm from Mt. Gilead. Its cool how most of your family has went to Ohio State. I'm not the biggest fan of track but I really enjoy sports. Mostly football, basketball and golf.
I agree with you 100% on the points that you brought up about embarrassment.I also haven't really felt these things about my living situation, but I feel in in my car since it's a beater. Anyways it was great reading your blog.

  2. Hey Aubrey my name is Andrew Vidrick. I live in Powell, Ohio not to far away from Lewis center. I went to Liberty High school and i'm assuming you went to Orange since you live in Lewis Center? I don't know much about track but when I hear the word Invitational I am guessing that means you are pretty good at what you do. I play hockey and used to play lacrosse. I am also commuting from my house in Powell so it is about a 45 minute drive for me and assuming its around the same for you. I think it is cool how your family went to OSU because my family also graduated from OSU including my older brother also. I hope I get to know you better this year, it was really nice getting to know so little things about you!

  3. Hi Aubrey my name is Brianna. I live in Delaware, OH not too far from Lewis center but not close. I ran track too I did the 200 meter dash and the 400 it wasn’t fun it was really hard to run. Both of my parents went to Ohio State as well. I also agree with the embarrassment part in that quote I definitely have felt embarrassment at my house. When my house looks messy and I have friends over I feel embarrassed for it.
