The profile that I choose to analyze was oncology nurse Dana Viviano on page 111. The reason I choose this one because it really inspired me because my own mother is Nurse practitioner in the the oncology department also. So it made me think of if my mother was Dana, I don't know much about what she does, but from this short passage I read about Dana it can give me some short of idea of what she has to go through. In the text when Dana stated, " I love seeing these patients and having a privilege to know a piece of their life. I laugh with them; I cry with them. i honestly can say I enjoy coming to work every day" ( Dana 113). This made me realize the struggles my mother might have to go through and some days I can see it on her face when she steps through that door. If something happened to a patient I could see it from the moment she steps in, just quiet and a gloomy look, but on the other hand when a patient gets better she is in the best mood ever.
This lead me to research the type of things that oncology people have to go through and it shocked me. Around 600,000 people die a away from cancer each year and around 150,000 people die just from lung and bronchus alone. Dana has spent 17 plus years as a oncology nurse now and is taking care of a 24 bed unit, she has 4 children and her husband is a breast oncologist. Becoming an oncologist has became a very competitive career through out the years. The earliest description of cancer was found in the Edwin Smith papyrus dating back to 1600 B.C. The document describes breast tumors removed by a tool called the fire drill. How it stated there was no treatment. A recent study showed there are more than 419,000 new skin cancer cases attributable to indoor tanning each year in the US alone. So stop tanning, its bad for you.
This is a radiation oncologist station where they are able to give the treatment that the patient needs.

Andrew, I"m not shocked by the numbers, because I know cancer of many types is nearly epidemic in some areas and families. I am thankful for the treatments available and people working in the field like your mother. Good post here and valuable info to read, including your advice about indoor tanning.
ReplyDeleteI really loved this profile a lot, I am currently in this situation with my mother batteling cancer as well. It is sad the amount of people who get diagnosed cancer and really it's something heartbreaking to encounter. I agree with Mike I am pleased there's treatments available for cancer, just hoped that at the standards of technology that 21st century we don't have still a concrete antidote for at least one type of cancer in which eradicates it.
ReplyDeleteI do not have anyone in my family fighting cancer, but I didn’t know your mother was involved in oncology. It’s nice how you brought in your mother into your response. I think that by making things personal, we allow more people to open themselves up as well.
