Family

The profile that had the most impact on me was the one with the firefighters Dekalb Walcott Jr and Sr. I like the bond that they have with each other. They started at the bottom being cotton pickers and worked their way up to where they are today. The profile that I like the least was the one with the scientist Dorothy Warburton. This was still a good story though about how Dorothy proved her father wrong and became a scientist. Both of these stories show the importance of hard work and never giving up. Dekalb Jr worked hard to become a firefighter and Dorothy worked had to become a scientist. They both put in countless hours to get where they are today where they are contributing members of society.

One difference that I saw between the two stories is that Dekalb Sr supported his son all the way from day one. With Dorothy, her father told her that a girl couldn’t become a scientist and that she shouldn’t try. She had to overcome this adversity and try extra hard to prove her father wrong. Family can have a huge impact on your career. Dorothy could have easily taken her father’s words to heart and never tried to become a scientist. Dekalb Jr had the support of his father to get him through the training to be a firefighter. At the end of the day they both got the job they wanted but having the support of your parents is definitely a huge plus. It also is good that she proved her father wrong. I guess it just depends on the way you look at it, but she’s happy where she is and that’s what matters.

I can relate to this in my own life. My dad is a contractor and my grandpa was also a contractor before he retired. My brother also works for my dad and he is learning all the stuff from my dad.  I’m not sure if he is going to take over his business or not but nonetheless, I am the only one who has done construction on this side of the family. Even my grandma does wallpaper for a living which is kind of like construction, but not as intense. At first, I felt pressure to continue the legacy but I have my own plans on what I want to do in life. I know my dad will support me no matter what whether or not I follow in his footsteps.

My dad is the one on the right surprisingly. I don't have a picture with him or a picture of his work. This is all I could find of him.

  1. Hi Mason, I wrote about the firefighter story with Dekalb as well, it impacted me too. It made me realize that I've always had passion for what I want to do in life since I was really young, just like how Wallcott the III did for becoming a firefighter. I agree a lot with the difference you brought up and I was thinking about this while I was reading it.

    1. The firefighter story was very good I'm glad you liked it as well. I listened to a podcast this week at work and they talked about this kind of thing. Where you need to have people around you that will help push you to get where you want to be.

  2. Hey mason, i think its cool that you want to do your own thing and not just do whatever your family has done in the past. Its great to hear your father is going to support you, that's always helpful because they really do have big influences in our life so its hard to say no to someone that is always there for you.

  3. It definitely is a big help to have a supportive family to be there for you. I wouldn't be where I am today without that man and I am lucky to have them.
